The Month of Adar

Etymology & Strength

The month of Adar carries immense strength, as reflected in the phrase "Adir Bamarom Hashem"—"Hashem is mighty above."

The name Adar itself holds deep meaning: Aleph-Dar—Aleph (representing Hashem) dwells within this month. It is a time of divine presence and powerful energy.

Increasing in Joy

The sages teach: "When Adar arrives, we increase in joy." This applies to the entire month, not just its holidays. Each day, we should cultivate greater joy than the day before.

Why?

  • A person born in Adar is said to be free from the evil eye.

  • "Mazalo Bari"—The mazal (spiritual influence) of Adar is strong and healthy.

  • Since Aleph-Dar signifies Hashem’s presence, this month holds profound spiritual strength.

Planting an Adar

The Talmud states: "Anyone who wishes to ensure their investments yield good returns should plant an Adar." While Adar is not literally referred to as a tree, the concept of "planting" suggests deep-rooted stability and prosperity.

Spiritual Meaning of Adar

According to the Bnei Yissaschar, Adar represents an awareness that all we accomplish is not our own doing. True success requires the right mindset—one must "plant an Adar" within consciousness.

  • "Hashem is within nature." Recognizing this reality is not just an intellectual exercise but a somatic experience.

  • Emunah vs. Bitachon:

    • Emunah is the belief that Hashem is good.

    • Bitachon is the deep trust that Hashem believes in us and is present in every detail of our lives.

  • Joy is a felt sense in the body—when we dance, we experience it physically!

  • Aleph-Dar reminds us that Hashem dwells here, even in the lowest worlds.

Miracles Within Nature

The month of Adar and the miracle of Purim reveal Hashem’s presence within nature.

  • Supernatural miracles—e.g., the Exodus and splitting of the sea—are open and undeniable.

  • Hidden miracles—like those in the Purim story—are concealed within natural events.

  • Chassidus teaches that hidden miracles stem from an even higher spiritual source than open miracles.

  • The Talmudic passage about "planting an Adar" hints at recognizing Hashem’s hand in all things.

This understanding leads to Bitachon, trust in Hashem’s hidden guidance, which in turn brings deep joy, the essence of the month.

Dispelling Doubt: The Key to True Joy

The Talmud states: "There is no greater joy than the removal of doubt."

  • Doubt and uncertainty create anxiety and sadness.

  • Letting go of control and trusting Hashem brings true joy.

  • The miracle of Purim embodies this concept: Esther ("hidden") and Megillah ("reveal") illustrate the revelation of Hashem’s hidden orchestration.

"Az Yimalei Schok Pinu—Then our mouths will be filled with laughter." When Moshiach comes, we will look back at history with laughter, realizing Hashem was always guiding us.

Laughter, Joy & Transformation

  1. Laughter & Gevurah – Yitzchak’s name means laughter. True joy comes from deep recognition, not superficial pleasure.

  2. Simcha & Thought Power – Science and Chassidus agree that thoughts shape emotions. Consciousness connects us to our higher selves.

  3. Dancing & Joy – Joy breaks barriers, overcoming even the exile itself.

  4. Moshiach & Joy"Moshiach = Sameach Yud"—one who rejoices with the full depth of their soul brings redemption closer.

The Letter Kuf: A Lesson in Elevation

Adar is associated with the Hebrew letter Kuf, resembling the letter Hey but extending downward.

  • Kuf (קוף) means "monkey," symbolizing imitation and superficiality.

  • Kuf dips into the realm of Klipa (concealment), disguising Hashem’s presence.

  • Hey (ה) represents holiness and divine breath.

  • The task of Adar is to rectify Kuf—to reveal Hashem’s presence even in concealed places.

Transforming Darkness into Light

  • Tzimtzum (constriction) led to a world of fragmentation.

  • Our mission is to see even Kelipa (concealment) as part of Hashem’s plan.

  • Free choice allows us to transform darkness into light.

  • Recognizing that Hashem is present within all aspects of life leads to profound joy.

Amalek: The Battle of Consciousness

Before Purim, we are commanded to remember Amalek, who attacked Israel upon leaving Egypt.

What is Amalek?

  • "Malak" (sever)—Amalek cuts off our connection between mind and heart.

  • "Amal Kuf"—The toil of Kuf—superficiality, materialism, and doubt.

  • Amalek represents the final battle: fragmented consciousness vs. unity consciousness.

  • Before Purim, we must recognize and overcome our "Kuf" moments that pull us downward.

The Joy of Purim & The Transformation of Haman

Haman, a descendant of Amalek, was the source of despair. Yet, through the hidden hand of Hashem, the tables turned, leading to the greatest joy of Purim.

The Spleen & Mental Clarity

  • In Chinese medicine, the spleen is linked to excessive mental effort and worry.

  • The rectification of Adar is dispelling doubt, cultivating Bitachon.

  • True joy comes from trusting Hashem’s hidden plan, even in confusion.

The Sign of Adar: Pisces (Fish)

  • Yaakov blessed Ephraim and Menashe: "Vayigdu larov bekerev haaretz"—"May they multiply like fish."

  • Rabbi Chaim Vital: Water represents hidden reality, a higher spiritual source.

  • Fish have no evil eye because they remain within their life source.

  • In Adar, we experience a heightened awareness of Hashem’s presence.

Conclusion: Adar’s True Joy

The secret of Adar is the joy that comes from awareness—that all is orchestrated by Hashem, even the hidden parts of life. When we live with this recognition, we experience true simcha and become vessels for the light of redemption.
